Change Happens Really Slow and Really Fast
I always forget what change feels like.
When I was in middle school, high school felt like lightyears away. Meanwhile, I was getting taller. My backpack was getting heavier. The pieces I was playing on the piano were getting harder.
When I finally made it to high school, college couldn’t come soon enough. Every class felt long. Every fight with my parents, or some kid in my grade, seemed to drag on forever. Meanwhile, I was barrelling through firsts: my first time driving a car, my first kiss, my first hat trick playing hockey, my first time smoking weed.
When I was in college, “real life” felt like a game that would never start. I had a hard time imagining life without homework, exams, recreation sports, and video games. Meanwhile, I was already starting to prioritize things like going to the gym, reading, socializing with people older than me, even tutoring younger students and thinking about my career.
I actively thought “my life isn’t changing fast enough,” while in reality, I was changing at hyperspeed.
When I graduated from college, and started working my first full-time job, I agonized over how long it was going to take me to become a full-time, successful writer. A week felt like a month. A…
