How To Think About Pricing Your Ghostwriting Service

There are 5 levels to increasing your income as a ghostwriter.

  • Charging per word
  • Charging per hour
  • Charging per month
  • Charging per asset
  • Charging per outcome

Let’s take a brief look at each one and where you should be thinking about positioning yourself as a Premium Ghostwriter.

Level 1: Charging Per Word

You want to escape this level as quickly as you can.

The fact that your value is tied to the number of words you write means you inherently have very little long-term pricing power.

Move on.

Level 2: Charging Per Hour

Getting paid per hour is a simple way to be compensated — in the beginning.

But you do NOT want to be in the business of your value being tied to “effort” for long. There is no incentive to get better or get your work done faster.

Why would you if it means you actually make less money?

Level 3: Charging Per Month

Is this better than being paid per word? Yes.

Is this better than being paid per hour? Usually. But getting paid in exchange to do “anything” the client needs is a giant mistake — and almost always ends up earning you less than if you had just charged hourly.

Make sure you are very specific about what you will and won’t do.

Level 4: Charging Per Asset

This is the correct, and most lucrative, way to monetize your skills as a ghostwriter.
